There is the Left versus Right thing - where politics seems to demand you are one or the other.
I have always said "both are wrong". And often get attacked more than if I feigned support for one of the other.
This is because a person being obedient to a tribe is honoured more by a competitive tribe than someone who shuns all tribes.
Both left and right wing tribes automatically sense this heresy and treat you as the most dangerous kind of political actor, if you shun every tribe equally. Left and right wing tribes are really 'the same' tribe at the root. And the battle is an internecine one. Both differ only at the margins.
This is because any tribal actor knows obedience is what matters first - status within the tribe. Not the tribes hallowed principles. Obedience to the tribe and its authority. And particularly submission to the hierarchy. Think about how apes are socially - that is a perfect exposition of human social organisation. Often the leading ape is killed by the royal court when they want to climb and have found the power to do so.
Whats amusing psychologically is when some, especially the left, claim they are doing it for moral reasons or because it shows an evolutionary advance. I must be careful here of not supporting the right more than the left! Its just an example. The right do it to - same kind of thing, different form.
Even tribes which have hated each other for decades, will join forces against any outside voice which openly refuses tribal obedience. Remember the original Planet of the Apes film?
This is why you see deep and long term and often impenetrable rivalries say in Ireland, now suddenly joining together against open borders.
All governments know this very well indeed. And use it as a tool for control of the great masse, at scale.
Orwell described it very well in 1984 (in 1948!). The state understands it, teaches it to its members, and uses it to 'attack' even its own tribal people - to maintain control, because it works.
Don't be fooled when they say this is for you own good. This is a classic psychological and binding lock, known as virtue laundering - a bad act = good intent. And moral licensing - a good deed = free pass for bad.
Authority gains control, at scale when it can say this - “I’m good, so my bad is okay.”
