At a farm open day recently, the farmer was telling us about their method for mitigating the use of pesticides. He said:
"our method nurtures both the good and the bad, to bring it all into back balance"
I don't think this man is a holy man. Or, I do not think he yet realises that he is a holy man.
He meant that they take care equally of both the predators and the prey which live among the farms growing food. They do not just kill all the annoying beetles and wasps. They look after everything equally because in the end, everything has utility.
The reason being that if they kill all the predators, their food destroying prey will not survive. Likewise, if they kill all the food destroying prey, the predators will not survive. And this balancing act is how they can maintain the growth without artificial chemicals.
I tried, as usual uselessly, to point out this was an astonishing holy prayer for both him directly and others listening. To no avail.
Suffice to say that the holy spirit or if not religious, whatever it is which makes one act from the good, is present even in non religious people. I do not have religion. Yet it's a compelling idea.
The spark of the original source is there, inside. Religion is not required to bring forth what is inside us to save us. Just observation of what is there. And if we cannot bring forth what is inside us, what we cannot bring forth, will destroy us. I'm not saying religion is a good thing or a bad thing. It is what we make of it that matters.
There is much to say about farmers and farming which is being woefully neglected by the nation. It is much closer to the source, it nurtures the land and cares for it and by implication has far more concern for those who will come after. They have to take critical care about the future more than a city dweller. They understand there must be resources available for their descendants for years ahead. That sudden shocks in the weather must be hedged against. They understand about the importance of their descendants and what remains for them when they are gone.
So farming to me is a 'story' about our heritage and our spiritual being as a nation. Farmers are the representatives of the nation closest to the source of who we really are. Yet we've been neglecting these prophets and praying at the altar of Me instead.
So what is my point?
Farmers represent a substantial voting bloc having been woefully neglected. Since the war, the advent of the welfare state and so called human rights law which has created a society which today treats people more unequally than before it existed. It is my intent to put the farmers condition at the front of policymaking inside the party and in my campaign to restore this nation. Not just to preserve farming in Britain. But to win the power necessary to raise farming in this country to new heights.
