- Passive Appreciation: As the city grows and becomes more desirable, the potential rental value of that location rises naturally. The asset appreciates purely due to external community growth while requiring no active work from the title holder.
- The Speculative Hold: Development is often deferred into the future, waiting for the surrounding area to become even more crowded to maximise potential returns.
This dynamic creates an artificial scarcity of prime space. This exact interaction between the public collection of rent versus the taxing of productivity explains why open border policies create such volatile economic and political friction.
"Global marginal land" refers to nations where poor infrastructure, weak legal systems, or geographic isolation mean human labour yields a near-zero return. When borders open, workers naturally migrate to super-marginal countries where the existing infrastructure, technology, and rule of law instantly multiply the economic output of their daily labour.
However, in an economy funded by taxing productivity, every new immigrant is hit with income and consumption taxes from day one, penalising their effort. Simultaneously, because the productivity tax has already shrunk the local margin and rendered borderline spaces "economically dead," incoming labour cannot spread out onto available land. They will possess the cutting-edge infrastructure, automated industries, and asteroid wealth that multiply the output of any labour performed there.
- Earth as the New Marginal Land: Because the economic center of gravity, innovation, and high-yield industry shifts outward to space, the Earth itself becomes the new marginal land. The regions left behind on Earth—reliant on older infrastructure and depleted or heavily regulated resources—become the baseline where human effort produces the lowest comparative return.
Economic value is never about sheer physical volume; it is always about location and the productivity enabled by that location. A planet or asteroid is economically dead until trillions of units of capital are invested to make it habitable. If a spacefaring society continues to fund its public space stations and planetary domes by placing a revenue penalty on productive activity (taxing the wages of space workers and the returns on life-support machinery), the economic margin will continue to shrink inward. As the wealth and productivity of space colonies skyrocket, the relative standard of living on Earth will fall behind. Because the space colonies fund their public infrastructure by taxing the productivity of their own space-faring workers, those workers will see the newcomers as an economic threat that will drive up their public revenue obligations. The exact same conflicts we see today will play out across the solar system, with Earth-born citizens treated as an external burden.
