My feeling is that when a society has grown so wealthy that it no longer needs to fear about shortages, starvation, poverty etc, it cannot cope with it! Society needs an existential threat as part of life. Like a primordial instinct if you like from times when it was necessary to keep us on our toes during good times because we knew real danger was always just around the corner. But today, with enormous power to produce wealth, with general widespread threat to life a distant historic memory, a deep anxiety develops in all people. There is no threat any more. Yet we still need to feel threat as part of everyday life - it's in our 'genes'. This anxiety develops into fear. The current mode to mitigate the fear is to create imaginary threats out of nothing. We create imaginary enemies, demons, conspiracy theories, evil people to be exterminated...to get rid of the fear. Even if that results in untold harm and a booming excess death toll.
